I thought this article shows some light on the subject of knee problems. I might add I believe knee problems thought from running in itself is not true. I have mentioned on occasion that I myself have an artificial knee. Replacement was from an accident on my job and not from running. Also being overweight contributes to knee problems as well.
Two posts in one day. Impressive, just wanted to mention that today marks the first day of Breast Cancer Awareness month. The Race for the Cure is coming up if you are interested! Josh and I ran the Chick-fil-A 5k on Labor Day. Other than walking the Bunny Run back in the spring, the Chick-fil-A was the only other 5k I have participated in this year. So I'm thinking the Race for the Cure may be my next race. I've heard it's a good one. There are studies suggesting that a low-fat diet reduces the risk of breast cancer and/or reduces the recurrence of breast cancer in many women. Of course, exercise is also touted as a good preventative measure for breast and other cancers. There is not enough money in the world to cure all the people who have or will get cancer. We must seek prevention!Speaking of low-fat diets and health benefits.....I have had people express concern for my knees when I tell them about marathoning or doing long distance running. And while it is true that running CAN cuase knee problems, I don't think running in and of itself is a culprit. People like Dean Karnazes have excellent biomechanics and run distances I could only dream about. He has never had any significant injuries. Many times overuse is the culprit or lack of proper stretching as well as poor form. BUT, to me, carrying too much extra body weight can be more of a long term debilitator for the knees. People run during given moments in their day. Carrying extra body weight is with you at every moment. So a low-fat diet, along with some form of exercise can not only help prevent cancer, but will also spare your knees (most likely) and possibly increase longevity all around!
